大学自治成立の契機となった1914年の沢柳事件と、その崩壊を示す1933年の瀧川事件の実態を明らかにすべく、資料の収集と分析につとめた。沢柳事件については、帝国議会委員会記録を入手し、当時の文科大学教授坂口昂の日記を東京在住の遺族の好意でコピ-し、また東京朝日、京都日出ほかの諸新聞・雑誌から関係記事を採集した。その結果、大学自治については法科大学だけではなく、各分科大学の支持が存在したこと、文相は議会においては大学自治を承認していないこと、事件後京大では文部省の推薦する総長候補を拒否し、京大内部より総長を選出することに成功したこと、などの新事実を発掘することができた。瀧川事件については、東京の朝日新聞社、国立国会図書館、国立公文書館、東京大学法学部、名古屋大学法学部瀧川文庫、立命館大学図書館、県立鳥取図書館、京都府資料館で基本資料をコピ-し、帝国大学新聞(復刻版)を購入し、また当時の学生5氏よりヒアリングを行った。とくに事件の中心にあった佐々木惣一・末川博両教授旧蔵の関係文書をすべてコピ-できた。これらによる新知見としては、右翼新聞『日本』を中心とする国体擁護運動が事件の発端に密接に関係すること、京大教授会の分裂と一部教官京大復帰の真相、鳩山文相が事件後の帝国議会で明確に大学自治否定を明言したことなどがある。沢柳事件についての原稿はほぼ完成しており、瀧川事件と合わせて一冊の本の出版を計画している。また佐々木惣一についての伝記執筆も予定している。近刊の『大正デモクラシ-の群像』(岩波書店)におさめた「佐々木惣一と日本の自由主義」は、その手はじめである。
