项目摘要

プトレマイオス朝後期及びロ-マ支配初期の夥しいエジプト出土ギリシア語パピルス文書中に極めて頻繁に《〓》と名告る正体不明の人々が出て来るが,私は過去多年に亘る研究の中で之らの人々を専ら債務拘束の観点から考究して来た。乃ち債務契約に際し自らを人身抵当とする為に「波斯人」と自称して保護を抛葉し,債権者を安心させて借財の機会を得ようとする偽計的虚構と推論したのである。前1〜後2世紀の史料では確かに恁かる性質のものが殆どだが,今回資料の更なる博捜によって問題は寧ろ混迷を深めて来た。中・南部エジプトのAkorisやPathyris出土前2世紀の数世代に亘る家蔵パピリ文書群が誌す〓の呼称は瞭かに軍務の脈絡の中にある。而も概ね成功者の家系に属する。他方少数乍ら債務契約の為積極的に此の呼称を取る者もあり,その同一人が債権者のち誅求を躱す為に今度は《王の農民》たらんと佯る別史料もある。要するに〓の実態はその名称の初期と末期とでは此の様に異なって見える。其処には在地兵士層末裔の社会的没落を憶測させるものもあるが,それは史料分布の偶然性によるものかも知れないので猶断定を保留する。不審な呼称「波斯人」の縁起及び真義は今回猶解明され得なかったが,外国人の意とも推し量られる。問題はxwodに於ける債務執達史の妙な名称《〓》が之と関連するかの疑いであり,〓の客体を問ふ要が喫緊の課題として残った。それは〓(徴発原籍)外への民衆移動の証しかも知れない。地方民衆の一部の社会的上昇に就いては前記数群の数世代家伝パピリの分析や地方役人の動態〓の層序究明,更にはP.Tebt.5のlex fori条項の再検討等によって推測した。成果の一部は本年2回の口頭発表(5月28日歴史学研究会大会,12月27日西洋古代史冬季セミナ-「パピルスから見たヘレニズム時代」)の中に含めた。
