私たちは、すでに数年間にわたってイ-リアス、オデュッセイアの研究、さらに平家物語、楚辞、ギルガメシュ叙事詩、ベ-オウルフ、ロ-ランの歌などの研究を共同で進めてきた。昭和61年度科学研究費の助成を受け、その成果の一端を叙事詩の比較文化的綜合研究報告としてまとめ、小冊子『叙事詩の世界』を刊行することができた。これは予備的な研究成果であったが、今年度はこの研究を継続発展させ、その完成を目指すことに注がれた。共同研究は、1.共通した人間性の側面と歴史的文化特殊性との関係が見出されるか、2.文化の相違性を前提しながら共通した叙事詩の構造を持つ理由を検討するという、大きな目標を掲げたものであった。具体的には、(1)各叙事詩のもつ文体上の特質、韻律や表現技法、定型表現の意義と機能の確認、(2)作品中の登場人物や場面設定の特徴、それらの歴史的背景を検討すること、(3)担当した叙事詩の時代背景をふまえつつ人間観、神観、英雄観の共通性を探る、という三つの観点をもってそれぞれが担当する叙事詩に取り組んだ。前回果たせなかった研究のために、必要な資料、研究文献の調査・収集を行うとともに、定期的な研究会での検証作業の詰めを行なった。その結果、前回の小冊子の続編として成果をまとめるのではなく、共同研究の成果を世に問うという意味で出版するかどうかの検討に入った。既にその体制と準備は整ったとの判断から、出版計画を進めることを決定した。具体的な出版計画を練り、出版社(新地書房)との交渉に入り、それを受ける形で、平成二年三月末を締め切りに本格的な原稿執筆に入った。一連の共同研究の成果は、平成三年二月に出版される予定である。
