日本において、家族史的なメソッドを用いて、実証的に家族社会学を展開した人に小山隆をあげることができる。甲州山梨郡山崎村の研究や白川村の大家族の研究などがそれに当る。彼の研究方法は宗門人別改帳、過去帳、水帳、五人組帳、旧町村役人の諸願控え帳簿などの資料を用い、精密に丹念に再構成してゆくものであるが、この方法は、最近注目を浴びている、アナールスクールやケンブリッジ学派のメソッドと基本的には同じであり、しかも、その着手は、半世紀余も遡ることになるのである。小山は常々、「日本の家族社会学は、他に類例のない好資料を身近にもっている。それが"宗門人別改帳"である。」と主張されていたが、宗門人別改帳は、断片的ではあるが各地に残在している。その中にあって吉川村の宗旨人別改帳は村落の全域をカバーし、タイムスパンも100年をはるかに超るものであり、一級の資料といえよう。この資料は宗門人別改帳を中心とした一連の古文書群から成り立っており、周辺関係を記述するにも好都合である。従って、欧米の教区簿冊に優るとも劣らない歴史資料であり、庶民家族の実態を知るためには、類例のない実証資料といえる。アナールスクールやケンブリッジ学派の論点の重要な部分は、これまで通説とされてきた、進化論的家族論や、産業革命の結果、核家族が発生したというような、実証的資料を欠いた、平板な近代化論やグランドセオリーの否定にあることは言を待たないが、吉川村の近世家族においても核家族の優位性が統計的に確認された。一般に東北農村の近世家族においては大家族が中心的様態であるかのような諸説が多かったが、現実の資料によれば、核家族が予想以上に多くみられたのである。しかし、この核家族は、世帯主の年令階級が中年域であり、小山のいうところの中年型核家族であることに注意しなければならない。創設世帯としての若年型やライフサイクルの終期の核家族ではない。
