本研究は、(1)ドイツ第三帝国の社会的基盤の構造的特色を画きだし、ついで(2)それをナチス権力の多頭政治的手法と関連づけて、第三帝国のもつダイナミズムを解明することを目的とした。まず、ナチス支持層と非支持層、支配権力と諸社会集団の関係および変遷に留意しながら、第三帝国の社会的基盤に関する内外の研究の収集・整理・考察を行った。その結果はおよそ次の通りである。ナチスの支持層については、新旧中間層がその圧倒的比重をしめた。彼らが社会主義革命を敵視しながら、他方大資本家・大地主といった支配層をもはや信頼せず、また現状の変革を求める一方で秩序・安定をも求めたことが、彼らの行動を矛盾にみちたものにした。ナチスの権力掌握を成功させたものには支配層の力が大きかったが、中間層の以上のような矛盾にみちたスローガンの寄木細工は混乱した大衆の心をとらえるのに役立った。政権掌握後ナチスは、小商人に対しては百貨店等大資本に対する保護を、手工業者に対しては保護対策としてのギルド的自治組織の強化を、農民に対しては経営の安定策をそれぞれ行い、特に旧中間層の社会生活における地位の確保をはかる一方、組織化を進めた。農民の組織化については、33年9月の全国食糧団の設立が一つの指標となるが、そこに至る過程は多様である。検証した一例をあげると、カトリック系農民はナチス政権の成立まではナチ化していないが、33年7月の一党独裁制の確立とともに彼らは新体制に順応する。労働者の組織化については、33年5月、いわゆる経営者と労働者の民族共同体「ドイツ労働戦線」を組織し、民主主義の否定を唱えながら、他の労働者組織の解体を行った。その他、ナチスは婦人、学生、官僚、教員、医師、芸術家等職能別の組織化も行った。また超国家主義の風潮をつくり、34年以降、ナチスに反対するものやユダヤ人の弾圧を行った。研究成果の一部は来年度公表の予定である。
