1920年代という時代は、第一次世界大戦と大恐慌によってその前後を明確に区切られている特異な時代とはいえ、歴史的文脈を無視して論ずることができないのは言うまでもない。わざわざこのような「常識」を言い出したのは、研究の過程で、従来のアメリカ20年代研究がその特異性、新奇性にのみ注目していたことに気付かされたからである。そこで本年度の研究では、20年代社会を生み出した要因をそれ以前の時代に探ることに一つの強調点を置いた。とりわけ娯楽の歴史についてその作業を行い、1890年代頃からキャバレー等の現代的娯楽施設が出現しつつあったことを確認した。このことは、たとえば禁酒運動を評価する上で小さからぬ意味を持つ。というのは、堕落・腐敗した酒場廃絶の試みとしてと同時に、より品位ある娯楽施設確保の努力として捉えてはじめて、禁酒運動の意義が明白になるからである。他方、都市化・世俗化という傾向への伝統的価値観の反撃という20年代の今一つの特徴を検討するために、スコープス裁判を具体的テーマに選んだ。公立学校における進化論教育を禁じたテネシー州法をめぐって戦われたこの裁判は、従来、都市的寛容と農村的不寛容との対立の事例とされてきた。しかし都市的文化がいまだ形成途上だったことを考慮すると、それは性急にすぎる判断であり、むしろ都市・農村それぞれの偏見同士の衝突の事例と理解すべきであろう。今後の計画としては、本研究を行うにあたって設定した具体的テーマの多くがまだ手付かずの状態で残されているので、さしあたりそれらを研究しなければならない。同時に1920年代アメリカ社会の全体的把握も試みる必要がある。そのためには、政治史と社会史との有機的・統合的理解、歴史的文脈における20年代の位置付けといった作業が、不可欠になるだろう。
