常法により精錬したのち、蛍光増白剤濃度を2段階に変えて染色した増白布を、液溜部にシリカゲルあるいは水を入れて管内の相対湿度を0%または100%に調整した調湿露光管にいれ、密封状態でフェ-ドテスタに装着し、紫外線および可視光線を照射した。蛍光スペクトルとCIE系の色度指数a^^・、b^^・を測定して、光照射による増白布の白度変化を経時的に追跡し、白度変化に対する増白度、相対湿度の影響を検討した。1.最高白度(染着量約2m mol/kg)以下の増白布では、光照射により主波長の蛍光強度、b^^・いずれも指数関数近似で低下し、露光30〜40時間で未増白原布の白度に到達した。相対湿度100%条件下の蛍光強度とb^^・の低下率は相対温度0%条件下の約2倍であり、環境および布に含まれる水分が白度低下を促進させることを確認した。綿布中の蛍光増白剤の光退色機構はトランス-シス光異性化と光酸化の並列反応であり、光酸化が支配的であるので、水分は酸素の溶存媒体として光酸化の増大に寄与したものと推定される。2.最高白度以上の、いわゆる過増白(over dyeing)により蛍光増白剤本来の色が現れて淡緑色を呈した増白布では、光照射による蛍光強度およびb^^・の低下が著しく、露光30〜40時間では黄化が認められた。黄化傾向は相対湿度100%で顕著であり、白度低下と同様に水分により促進された。蛍光増白剤の光酸化による分解生成物に黄色物質が含まれ、過増白布ではその量が多いため、白度低下にとどまらず黄化を引き起こしたものである。
