The purpose of this research, which was carried out during the 1990 and 1991 fiscal years (April 1990-March 1992) was to install broadband high dynamic range seismographs at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (YSS) in the USSR and Prapat, Sumatra, Indonesia. (Note : During the course of this research the official name of the USSR was changed to Russia, but the former name is used in this report.) Despite some changes during the course of the research, basically the original plan was successfully carried out. The installation of the above two stations is one of the first steps in installing the POSEIDON (Pacific Orient SEIsmic Digital Observation) Network. As this network has not yet been officially approved, we are currently referring to this as the "pre-POSEIDON" network. The data acquired under this grant are being archived in the pre-POSEIDON Data Center, Earthquake Research Institute, Tokyo University, where they are all publicly accessible.The POSEIDON Project was proposed by Japanese researchers … More in 1987, and was, enthusiastically endorsed by prospective host countries in 1988 at an international conference held in Tokyo. The pre-POSEIDON project currently involves stations installed or definitely scheduled to be installed in Indonesia, the USSR, Korea, and the Philippines. Funds for these stations are being provided by this and other grants-inaid for scientific research from the Japanese government. Details of our activities under this grant are as follows.Indonesia : The station at Prapat is a cooperative effort of the Japan side and the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMG). A preliminary survey of the Prapat site was carried out during the 1990 fiscal year. From Oct. 17-25, 1991, the installation team (Geller, Suetsugu, Gunawan) traveled to Prapat to install the station ; the main components are the STS-2 seismometer and the NEC FC-9801 PC used for recording the data. The installation was successfully completed. The seismometer is operating satisfactorily, and data are being sent every month to Japan by the BMG. However, several tasks remain. (1) Better measures to insulate the seismometer from daily heat fluctuations are required to reduce the background noise level. (2) Software problems in the data logging system must be corrected. (3) If funds are available, the A/D converters should be upgraded.USSR : The station at YSS is a cooperative effort between the Japan side, the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics (IMGG) of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). When our original proposal was submitted, the USGS had agreed to furnish to the Japan side broadband equipment which would then be installed by the Japan side at YSS. However, at the request of the USGS, this plan was changed to the following. The USGS would install the broadband station at YSS, and this would then be operated as a three-way cooperative effort by the USSR, USGS, and the Japan side. The data from the YSS station will be sent directly to Japan and the USGS by the USSR side. Geller and Moriya visited YSS in August, 1991 and met with IMGG and USGS representatives for a site survey and to sign a memo confirming the above arrangement.
