A Comprehensive Study of the Trading Activities Across the Taiwan Straits by the Bin Nam Chinese Merchants in Japan

Although this research is supported as a one-year project by the Grant under the Monbusho International Scientific Research, it is, in fact, a continued part of the series of our intended research works. Thus, we briefly describe (1) research activities in the past, (2) outline of the research in this year (1990), and (3) plan for the future research.(1) Research Activities in the pastThe present research orignates from the discovery and arrangement by Ichikawa of the massive documents (about 40,000 items) Ieft by a Chinese merchant "Taieki Go", who did business in Nagasaki. These documents now belong to Nagasaki City by the courtesy of the desendants.Our initial study of the documents "A Study of the Documents left by a Chinese Merchant, Taieki Go" was supported by the B- Grant under the Monbusho Scientific Research Program (No. 59450069).Then in the following research "A Study of the History & Development of the Overseas Chinese Communities in Japan --based on the Records of an Overs … More eas Chinese Merchant, Taieki Go, and the Tombstones in the Chinese Cemetery, Goshin Ji Temple, in Nagasaki", we systematically extended our resarch actitities from indoor studies to field surveys with the under the financial support of the Monbusho Scientific Research Program (Grant B No. 61450082). And also the group of study members was composed voluntarily into the "Nagasaki Kakyo Kenkyukai" ; Study group of Overseas Chinese Merchant, (the Secretariat office is in Nagasaki Bunkensha Co. Ltd.. 1983).Following the above studies, we broadened our sphere of research activities to an international setting in the project - title pointed of "5", which was supported under The Monbusho. In Conjunction with this study, the historical group of Taiwan Academica (chaired by Prof. Yung-Ho TS' AO) cooperated with us to promote their own project "Studies in Historical Development of Maritime in Taiwan". We the Japanese scholars took advantagen not only to increase information exchange, but also to expand our scope of analysis, e. g. to carry on an extensive field survey. In particular, all personrecognized the necessity of having "The International Joint Workshop Overseas Chinese Merchants in Japan," and then its first meeting was held in Nagasaki in December, 1998.(2) Outline of the research in this yearThis year's research project was organized so as to sum up and review critically the researches in the past by holding an Internationgl Symposium at Chinese University of Hong Kong. Fortunately, the symposium ended successfully with the generous support of the related Japanese organizations. Althought based on the documents of Taieki Go, the Symposium highlighted important issues from the contemporary point of view, and a lot of a variety of reports and discussions.(3) Plan for future researchSince Hong Kong- Symposium is to be returned to the People's Republic of China ; so called Mainland China, the problems concerning the trading activities in the area facing Taiwan Strait, or more broadly the East China Sea, is now a day a great concern. Although our present research focuses on the nearer past, its close relation to today's issues drew interest of many scholars who attended there and bruot about fruitful result. Hence, we think it highly important and relevant to study the above problems from the contemporary point of view.Considering the conditions surrounding our research and enhanced interest, the continuation of the present research is quite timely and vitally important to understand for the current Asian affairs in general. Fortunately, the Hong Kong- Symposium found a response in several institutes in Mainland China, such as Amoi University, the Shang Hai Institute of Social Science, Dong Bei University of Finance & Economics, etc. with an offer of joint research in future. We are now discussing the effective way of co-operating with then.(Note)In December, 1989 with participation of about 40 scholars and overseas Chinese in Japan, the new workshop was reorganized by naming "Kyushu Kakyo & Kajin Kenkyukai" the study group of Overseas merchants in Japan (the secretariat is at Kyushu International University) Here after this organization shall be a center of research activities for Overseas chinese projects.
