项目摘要

昨今フェミニズム批評が盛んだが、その精神の源流に遡れば、18世紀に辿りつく。メアリ・ウルストンクラフトやメアリ・アステルもこの時代に、女子教育の向上、法的・経済的立場の強化、一方的な性道徳のおしつけの拒絶などを求めて、果敢な発言を繰り返している。これら先駆者達の、更に露払いとして存在したのが、当時ようやく現れた女性の物書き達である。まだまだ日蔭の存在ではあるが、やがてアフラ・ベ-ンに始まり、アン・ラドクリフ、ファニ-・バ-ニ-と続く女流職業作家の系譜は英国の文壇に独得の性格を与えることになる。彼女達を18世紀の文壇に君臨した大詩人アレクサンダ-・ポウプを軸として、その相互関係を探るという視座から考察するのが目的であった。ポウプと実際に交際のあった、レディ・メアリ・ウトレイ・モンタギュやメアリ・シ-ザ-等、所謂ブル-・ストッキングにつながる才女達や、彼の作品の中に現れる女性のモデルとされた人々の中に、当時の女性の知性のあり方がうかがえる。18世紀の女流詩人については、最近アンソロジ-が編まれ始めたが、名前は挙げられていても実際の著作は殆んど入手することができず、資料不足で考察は困難をきわめた。その中で、詩人とは必ずしも呼べないながら、「ダンシアッド」第一版に言及されているイライザ・ヘイウッドに注目してきた。ポウプを読む際には、彼が説く所謂「モラル」を見逃すことはできないが、ヘイウッドはそれに正面から対〓しているように思われるからである。しかし、彼女の私生活等について知るところが少ない為、どの程度ポウプを意識して著作活動をしていたのか等は未だ不明である。他の群小女流詩人(作家)についても、今後とも地道に資料探しを続けながら、更に考察を深め、彼女達の時代の中での存在を明らかにしていきたい。
