High mobility two-dimensional electron systems, subjected to a strong perpendicular magnetic field and cooled down to millikelvin temperatures, are a fascinating paradigm for the study of electron correlation effects. The strong repulsive Coulomb interaction between the electrons under these conditions forces them to make an alliance with the elementary flux quanta threading the sample in order to minimize the interaction energy. The strong correlation between electrons and flux quanta (more precisely, vortices) at commensurate ratios results in the formation of composite fermions and the appearance of fractional quantum Hall states. Experiments are proposed- to unravel the, thus far not well understood, energy dispersion of composite fermions,- to investigate the phase coherent transport in mesoscopic geometries in particular in the fractional quatum Hall regime,- and to study the influence of the range of the Coulomb interaction on the fractional quantum Hall states.
