项目摘要

万葉歌人については、文学面での研究が多いわりには、その歴史的研究は意外なほど少ない。彼らの主体的部分である官僚という点に、注目して、万葉歌人たちがいかに当時の政治に関わっていたかを考察した。中でも、注視したのは、長屋王・藤原四子兄弟がある武智麻呂・房前・宇合・麻呂、そして橘諸兄、藤原仲麻呂政権との万葉歌人といわれる官僚達の政治的関係である。1.長屋王と山部赤人らの万葉歌人との関係について考究する前提として、長屋王と彼の政権の実体を中心に進め、一番の基本的問題である長屋王の出生年について従来あった二説に関して自分なりの結果を出すことができた。2.藤原四子兄弟については、長兄武智麻呂の政治的重要性に主眼を置き、従来より重視されてきた房前にまさるべき、武智麻呂の政治的役割を解明できたものと思う。また、三男の宇合に就いては、『懐風藻』にも作品を多く残す文学面に於いて注視される人物であるが、宇合の文学面の活躍とそれにまさる政治的役割、万葉歌人との交流についていささかの新知見を得た。3.橘諸兄は、『万葉集』成立の鍵を握る人物と従来考えられてきたが、その諸兄と万葉歌人との関係、この両者の関係を前提とする諸兄の子息奈良麻呂と歌人との関係、この二つの関係を基軸とした政治的動向について、新しい解釈を成した。4.藤原仲麻呂政権の成立には、多くの政治的問題が存した。その中で重要な役割も果したのは、叔母にも当る光明皇后であった。その光明皇后も少ないが夫聖武天皇とのことを詠んだ歌を『万葉集』に残している。その歌を念頭にしながら、光明皇后の果した政治的役割について、新しい観点から考えてみた。
