草双紙(赤本・黒本・青本・黄表紙・合巻)を研究代表者・研究分担者・研究協力者が、各自の専門領域に応じて、対象分野を選び、国公私立図書館・文庫の収蔵書を調査した。この中から、検討対象作品を決定し、各作品を書誌・全文の翻字・挿絵の順に検討分析を行った。とくに教育史・文化史の面も重視した。調査過程は毎月1回定例の研究会義において報告し討論を行った。この間に対象作品群のもつ問題点や意義が次々に明らかにされた。以下その主要な点を列挙する。1.近世初期の仮名草子、たとえば「竹斉」などが黒本・青本にも多きく影響を与えていること。2.赤本の童話物は、文化年間(1800〜)以後も「豆本」の型式で継承されていること。(従来は宝暦年間以後消減したと考えられた)。3.中国古典(漢書・史記・三国志など)が黒本・青本に平易な文体で脚色され、年少者の読み物となっていたこと。4.中世の戦記物に登場する傍役的人物(渋谷金王丸・篠塚伊賀守・小山田求女)などが、黒本・青本においては主人公として描かれること。5.黄表紙や合巻に赤本・黒本・青本の様式が殊に絵柄で再現されていること。6.合巻において、歌舞伎摂取の方法は、絵師・画工によって異なること。これらの事実は、たんに文学史上の問題だけではなく、文化史・教育史の面からも大きな意義をもち、さまざまの示唆を与えるものである。ただし、当初の計画は三年間を予定していたが、一年間に消減されたため、充分、結果をあげるに至っていないので、引続き総合研究として分野と対象を拡大して行う必要がある。そのため平成3年度以降の科学研究費総合研究を申請している。
