実験室内に各種日常生活モデル機器を設置し,操作方法や操作高の変化と作業者の操作筋力との対応関係を検討することで,高齢者と若年者間で顕在化する年代的特異性や共通性について明らかにした.モデル機器は操作性と高齢者の機能適応との両側面から整理し,ドアの開閉やコンセント等の引き抜き操作を想定した押引力機器と,ドアノブ,水道蛇口や鍵,ガス元栓等の操作を想定した回転力機器の合計10種類とし,操作高の変化によるモデル機器活用時の操作感と複数の教示筋力を計測した.計測対象者は,高齢女性12名(68〜78歳)と若年女性11名(19〜21歳)であった.操作高に関しては,(1)肘頭高を基準とした適正操作高は押引操作では若年者群が,回転操作では高齢者群が各々高めの傾向を示した.(2)操作しやすい範囲の比較では,高齢者群は若年者群よりも狭い特徴を認めた.(3)操作機器の種類により適正操作高には差が窺え,縦型取っ手を押す操作を除く他の機器の適正操作高は肘頭高よりも低めに位置しており,特に回転操作機器では肘頭高と大転子高のほぼ中央を適正操作高とした.(4)適正操作高,及び上方向,下方向で操作しにくい高さと身体寸法の間には対応関係が成立しており,とりわけ縦型取っ手やドアノブの操作は身体寸法と強い相関関係を認めた.一方,操作筋力については,(5)若年者群の最大筋力は高齢者群に比較して全般的に強い傾向を示し,特に回転操作は押引操作に比較して年代差が顕著であった.(6)最大筋力に対する普段操作する程度,まあまあ楽に操作,かなり力を入れて操作の各々の最大筋力比は,高齢者群の方が若年者群よりも高率を示す操作機器が多数を占めた.(7)操作高の違いにより最大筋力には差が認められ,両群とも適正操作高で最も高値を示した.(8)握力と最大筋力の間には対応関係の成立を見たが,押引操作での相関は回転操作に比較して弱い傾向にあった.
