本年度は東京湾からアカエイ,銚子近海からコモンカスベ,また秋田県沖の日本海からドブカスベの3種のエイ類標本を集め,年齢,成長,繁殖および食性に関する研究を行った。まず東京湾産アカエイでは脊椎骨椎体に生ずる輪紋を年がかりに年齢解析を行ったが,読み取り精度を高めるため研磨法、染色法に改良を加える必要があるとの結論に達した。アカエイの歯には成長に伴って性的二型が生ずることを観察した。エイ類の歯にみられる性的二型の発現要因には2説があるが,胃内容物の解析結果からは性的二型は食性とは直接的なつながりはなく,性成熟に伴って雄の歯が尖るようになることが明らかとなった。食性は成長につれ変化し,成魚になると魚類の出現率が高くなる。性成熟は体盤幅356350mm(雄),500mm(雌)で,性成熟の大きさにも顕著な性的二型が認められた。生殖腺指数は夏よりは冬に高くなる傾向がみられた。コモンカスベでも椎体に輪紋は認められるものの,読み取りの精度は低かった。産卵期に関する調査から,本種はほぼ周年産卵が可能であるとの結論に至った。性成熟の大きさは,雄が体盤幅430mm,雌では450mmであった。胃内容物は魚類と甲殻類が高い出現率を示した他,頭足類も出現した。胃内容物重量は体重の3%以下で,平均では雄が0.83%,雌では0.92%であった。ドブカスベの採集標本は全体に体盤幅500mm以下のものが多く,未熟個体がほとんどを占めた。胃内容物重量は体重の1%を越す個体が多く,コモンカスベよりは全体的に高い値を示した。平均でみると,雄では1.23%,雌では1.26%であった。餌生物としては甲殻類の出現率が32.5%と最も高い値を示し,ついで魚類の15%となった。甲殻類の中ではエビジャコの出現率が図抜けて高かった。
