今年度(最終年度)は、平成3年度(初年度)の実績(昭和天皇の重態と死去に際しての祭りやイベントの「自粛」をめぐるマスコミ資料の収集、博多山笠・長崎くんち・唐津くんち等九州地域の比較的大規模な都市の祭りについての文献資料の収集、熊本県下の「村おこし」における祭りやイベントの位置づけについての行政資料の収集といくらかの観察調査)を踏まえ、収集資料の整理・分析・考察に当てるとともに、現在も大変な賑わいを見せ、昭和天皇の重態に際しても「自粛」をしなかった伝統的な都市の祭礼「間津くんち」に焦点を絞り、今日における祭りの意味と意義についてのかなり綿密な調査研究を集中的に実施した。「唐津くんち」調査では、平成4年8月25日から同30日にかけての祭り関係者からの聞き取り調査と、祭り当日およびその前後(11月1〜5日)にかけての(参与)観察調査によって、詳細なデ-タを手に入れることができた。そのほか、平成5年3月には東京に出張し、全国的な祭り・イベント状況についての情報を収集した。こうした調査研究を通じて、「競争原理」と「合理化」が極限的なまでに進展したはずの現代社会において、たとえ潜在的であれ強烈な「共同性志向」と「非日常性願望」とが確かに存在するという当初の研究仮説を実証できる地平には達することができたと思う。残された課題は、現在の祭りやイベントのブ-ム的状況に顕現している「共同性志向」や「非日常性願望」が、ポスト・モダンが云々される現代日本においていかなる「意味」をもっているのかを確定することである。
