日本列島の近海に沿って流れる黒潮は、一つは九州の西を過ぎて日本海に入り本州および北海道の西岸を洗い、他の一つは太平洋岸側の伊豆諸島に達している。本研究では、黒潮の流れに乗って原始・古代の南島および大陸からどのような文物が往来したのか、また九州沿岸地域にどのように影響を及ぼしたのかなどについて調査研究を試みた。調査研究の対象を1.南島産の貝製品(ゴホウラ・イモガイ・オオツタノハなど)、2.大陸の関係の深い支石墓の2点にしぼり、壱岐・対馬、五島列島などの島嶼および西北九州を中心とした九州西岸の沿岸地域を調査した。1のテ-マの南海産貝製品のうち、ゴホウラ製貝輪は有川町浜郷遺跡(五島列島)、平戸市根獅子遺跡(平戸島)、イモガイ製貝輪は佐世保市宮の本遺跡(九十九島中の高島)、五島列島の福江島大浜貝塚・中通島浜郷遺跡・宇久島宇久松原遺跡、オオツタノハ製貝輪は宇久松原遺跡・福江島大浜貝塚などで出士している。また、埋葬人骨にともなうアワビの副葬列が中通島浜郷遺跡、福江島大浜貝塚で確認されたが、同様な列は沖縄本島読谷村木綿原遺跡にもあり、弥生時代の五島列島と沖縄に共通した理葬習俗が見られることは注目される。南海産貝輪は九州西海岸をかすめて北九州へ運ばれるル-トの中で五島列島へもたらされたと考えられる。2のテ-マの支石墓については、甕棺・土壙・箱式石棺などの下部構造について調査した。九十九島の宮の本遺跡、五島列島の宇久松原遺跡・神ノ崎遺跡(小値賀島)・浜郷遺跡などの箱式石棺墓の中に南九州特有の古墳時代の墓制である地下式板石積石室墓を想起させるものがある。地下式板石積石室墓の祖源は縄文時代晩期の支石墓に遡る可能性を示唆しており、五島列島方面から南九州西海岸に到達したものと考えられる。この見解については平成3年11月9日、隼人文化研究会で「地下式板石積み石室墓の源流」と題して口頭発表をおこなった。
