明治期における新聞投書欄の調査・検討を通して、近代文学成立期の様相を明らかにするとこを目的とした本研究課題については、昨年度の科学研究費(奨励研究A)の交付を受け、基礎資料の収集と整備に努めてきた。本年度はこれを継続、発展させるとともに、目録・索引の作成に重点をおくことを研究計画の中心に揚げて取り組んできたが、以下にその実績の概要を報告したい。まず文献資料の収集については、昨年度に引き続いて「読売新聞」と「国民新聞」を主な対象とし、「読売新聞」については主に国立国会図書館、早稲田大学現代政治経済研究所に所蔵されているマイクロフィルムの閲覧、「国民新聞」については縮刷復刻版(日本図書センタ-)の購入を継続した。これによって、少なくとも両紙については、それぞれの創刊号から明治末までの全紙面に目を通したことになり、投書欄の変遷を含めて新聞の全体像を把握できたことは、今後の研究を進めるうえで大きな収穣であった。なお、これらの投書欄から文筆活動の第一歩を踏み出した作家が数多く寄稿し、明治文学に大きな位置を占める『早稲田文学』復刻版など、今年度は購入すべき重要資料が多く、設備備品費(図書費)が当初の予定額よりやや増えたことをお断りしたい。次に目録の調査によっても、知られていない近代作家の初期作品、習ら発表誌面の制約によるものであり、残っている「読売新聞」の目録を完備させることを次の具体的な課題としいた。あわせて、これらの成果を踏まえながら、新聞投書蘭の文学史的位置づけと、個々の作家活動との関わりを更に深く論究することが、今後継続すべき研究課題である。
