平成5年度に発足する重点領域研究「認知・言語の成立」の準備のために、3回の会議と1回の講演会を行なった。3つの計画研究の研究内容と総括班の役割を検討した。「認知の発達」班の研究は、認知の系統発達の検討と実験的手法によって特徴づけられる。それゆえ動物の認知研究が主体となり、そこで開発された行動技術や得られた結果をヒト、とくに障害児、の理解や改善に適用することを目指す。トリ、ラット、サル、チンパンジーなどの認知の特性を明らかにし、それらとの比較からヒトの認知の成立を明らかにする。また視覚に比較して聴覚認知の研究が遅れているので、とくにその点留意することとした。「環境との交互作用の発達」班は、2歳以下とヒトの乳幼児が母親を中心とした社会的な環境や物理的な環境とどのように関わり、それがかれらの認知・言語発達にどのような影響を与えるかを検討する。とくに言語と密接に関連することが予想される1群の前言語的行動に焦点をあてる。それによりこの面でのヒトの特徴を動物、障害児との比較から明らかにする。観察的な手法が中心になるが、実験による検討にも留意することが期待される。「音声と音声言語の発達」班は、上記の2班の研究を常に参照しつつ、2歳以下のヒトの乳幼児の音声の発達と音声言語の成立を検討する。聴覚機能と系統・個体発達、音声の生成と受容の系統および個体発達、母親など養育者との音声面での交互作用が主要なテーマとなる。動物、障害児との比較から、ヒトの特徴を明らかにする。「総括」班は、計画全体を見渡し、これらの計画研究の相互の連絡を促進すると共に、それぞれの計画研究がバランスのとれた発展をするように方向づける。
