アジアにおける国際貿易の古い朝貢貿易タイプから新しいタイプへの貿易構造の転換過程は、長期にわたって生じたものある。日本の対外貿易港として栄えてきた長崎港における厦門系商人が、この転換期にどのような対応してきたか、またどんな役割と活動をしてきたかについて、「泰益号」の営業記録往来文書の分析と追跡調査により究明し、同時に日中交流史及び中国商業史とのかかわりの中で、総合的調査研究をすすめてきた。平成3年3月から長崎市立博物館の依頼により、「泰益号」の営業記録往来文書の整理をすすめている。現在同文書3万点を甲子園大学に移転している。整理方法としては、年代別、差出人別に分類し、整理番号を付けて目録を作成中である。平成4年度は、そのうち3千通(1通約3〜4コマ)の手紙の整理と9,700コマのマイクロフィルムを作成した。この度の研究成果は、平成5年1月5日〜6日に、香港科技大学が主催する「民間文献と華南地域社会」シンポジウムで発表した。私は、福建商人(厦門系と福州系)が組織した「福建会館」の史料から商人組織の目的・運営の方法・会員数の変化を綿密に分析してきた。伝統的中国社会の商人が外地で地縁・業縁により結束してつくった組織、つまり商人たちの親睦・議事・情報交換の場所である「会館」の機能について研究した。またこのような社会組織をつくりあげた背景として、福建商人の経済活動にも焦点をあて、「在日中国商人の商業活動ー長崎華商泰益号の事例」を『甲子園大学紀要』(20号、1993年)で発表し、福建商人が長崎貿易で果たした役割を分析した。
