従来の研究によると、源氏物語の本文系統は定家本・河内本・別本に分類され、定家本を重視し始めたのは十五世紀に活躍した宗祇あたりかと推測され、宗祇に教えを受けた三条西実隆が家の証本として定家本系統を採用した結果、近世の流布本も定家本系になった、と考えられている。そこで先ず、宗祇が著した源氏物語の注釈書(『帚木別注』『種玉編次抄』)に引かれた本文を調べると、意外なことに河内本や別本も散在するので、宗祇が定家本を尊重したと見なす通説は再検討の余地がある。次に、三条西家から源氏物語を伝受して編纂した、と考えられる注釈書十一種を調査した。以下、成立順に並べる。1.編者未詳(宗硯か?)『源氏聞書』(1516年成立、竜谷大学図書館本)。2.猪苗代長珊『長珊聞書』(1516年、陽明文庫本)。3.吉田兼右『兼右聞書』(1546年、東海大学桃園文庫所蔵自筆草稿本)。4.里村昌休『休聞抄』(1550年、東海大学桃園文庫所蔵伝徳大寺公推筆本)。5.林宗二『林逸抄』(1560年、天理図書館所蔵自筆草稿本)。6.編者未詳『聞源抄』(1563年、内閣文庫本)。7.里村紹巴『紹巴抄』(1565年)。8.覚勝院『覚勝院抄』(1571年、穂久邇文庫本)。9.九条稙通『孟津抄』(1575年)。10.能登永閑『万水一露』(1575年)。11.編者未詳『紹巴聞書』(1579年、静嘉堂文庫所蔵)。このうち8は複製、7と9・10は活字本、11はマイクロフィルムにより、その他は複製などが出版されていないので実際に閲覧して、紙焼き写真を注文できるものは全て取り寄せた。調査の結果、物語本文の系統は引用部分が短いこともあり、すぐには結論を出せないが、注記内容に関しては今まで指摘されていないことを見出し、それを論文にまとめた(1994年、汲古書院より刊行予定)。
