1993年異常気象による冷害の調査研究を,気象的原因,作物的被害調査,社会的影響調査の3点に分けて行った.1993年の冷害の状況を調べた結果,日本全国の米収では1945年以来の大凶作であった.その内でも北海道,青森,岩手,宮城の各道県が作況指数40以下の大凶作である.特にこれらの道県の太平洋岸は作況指数が0-8と皆無に近い状況である.1993年の気象については全国的に4月から10月にかけて低温で,その内でも7月16日から8月15日間の低温は著しく,青森では平年に比較して4.3℃,岩手では4.1℃,宮城では4.0℃も低温であった。これはオホーック海から吹き出す海洋性冷気流(ヤマセ)のためである.このヤマセは例年に比較して強く,日本海岸にも影響を及ぼした.このヤマセの状況をNOAA/AVHRR衛星によって調べた.また西日本では例年に比較して降水量が多く,特に九州では763.7mmも例年に比較して多い.そのため日照不足を引き越こし九州の日本海岸で作況指数が悪い.この気象と作況指数の相関関係では22℃以下の低温の時間数との相関が大きい.また九州では8月の日照時間との相関が大きい.水稲の生育状態と気温経過について研究し,本年の冷害は遅延型と障害型の混じった混合型の冷害であったことを明らかにした.また新聞によって社会的影響を調べた.新聞が冷害による報道を本格的に始めたのは10月の作況指数が発表されてからであった.その後,店頭における米の不足,消費者の米の買いだめなどの現象が一般的になった.しかし,米市場では8月から米不足などによる高値があった.
