東京都練馬区に居住する45〜64歳の男女、計1000名を住民票から無作為に抽出し、訪問面接調査を行った。回答者は617名、有効回収率は61.7%であった。"望ましい老後の生き方"については、「努力と諦め」「自立と同調」「活気と静穏」「参加と離脱」の4領域に分類される41の質問項目により、回答者の老後観をたずねた。内容的に矛盾する組み合わせの両方を肯定した者を含めて、「はい」という回答の頻度が高く、この年令層の人々が老後の生きたについて、ある意味で"欲張り"なことが明らかになった。回答に性・年齢差はなかったが、いくつかの項目には顕著な学歴差が認められ、高学歴者ほど自律志向の強い傾向が認められた。SD法により「現在の老人」のイメージの測定を試みた結果では、大学生を対象とした先行研究により肯定的な評価が目立った。老いについての知識では、やいについて否定的に考えすぎているがゆえの誤解の多いことが認められた。老後の開始時期を自由回答法でたずねたところ、男性では定年退職や引退等の職業に関わる事象を老後の始期と考える者が多く、女性では家族の変化と健康度の悪化を老後の始期と考える者が多かった。健康度の悪化を老後の始期と考える者は、男女とも年齢が高いほど多かった。
