本研究の目的は近年稲作経営において取り組まれている米のマーケティングについて、現地実態調査を通じてその動向を整理し、合せて新しいマーケティング理論をもとに経営視点から分析することにあった。平成5年度の稲作生産状況は低温、台風害などのため戦後最悪の不作にみまわれた。国内消費量を200万tも下回る供給量しか確保できず、その不足分を輸入に依存せざるをえなかった。このような状況において自由米価格は暴騰し、米の流通に関わる業者は現物を求めて農村にまで集荷範囲を拡大してきた。本研究の計画段階ではこのようにドラスティックな状況が訪れるとは予想できなかった。このため実態調査を行なう際にも、特別栽培米を扱っている稲作経営からダイレクトーマーケティングの実態を把握し、それをもとに米のマーケティング問題を分析しようと考えていた。しかし、米の不作、自由米価格の暴騰は調査の実施をきわめて困難なものにした。いくつかの稲作経営の予備調査段階においては通常なら9月から遅くとも年内に販売されるはずの米が、自由米価格の模様眺めによって倉庫に保管されたままになっているという状況に出会った。このような実態は特異なものではなく、広く一般に行なわれていたのが実態であった。一般には米価格の高騰により生産者が販売意識にも目覚めたという論評があるが、反面でただ単に農協出荷金額との差額を得ようという目的で業者販売している例が多く、これはマーケティングとしてはなんらの努力なしに余剰を得るものであって決してマーケティング的に望ましい経営行動とは言えないというのが私の結論である。一方、これまでダイレクトマーケティングの実績があり、消費者を固定的に確保している経営では、年間に渡る受注体制、品質保持のための在庫管理体制、受注と代金回収体制などの面で特徴的なマーケティングシステムを確立させていた。
