本研究の目的は、日本語児の物語を語る能力の発達を他言語話者のそれと比較し、共通性と特殊性を明らかにすることにあった。カルフォルニア大学バークレー校のD.スロービンを中心にして世界各国で実地されている「フロック計画」と呼ばれる実験研究と同様の方法を日本語母語話者に実施した。被験者は、3歳児、5歳児、9歳児、大人(成人)の4群である。実験は、24の場面から構成されている絵本を各被験者(児)に見せて物語を語らせるというものであった。被験者によって語られた物語はVTRに記録された。得られた資料は、1)物語の全体および部分構造の発達(個々の場面での話の内容と前後の場面との続き具合い、全体の物語に対する一貫性など)、2)文法項目の発達(絵本に登場した人物・動物に対する言及の一貫性を保つために、名詞・代名詞、時制、新旧情報による助詞などの使い分けがどのように行われているか)、3)語彙の発達、4)家庭での読み聞かせと物語産出能力との間の関係、の4点について分析された。英語、ドイツ語、スペイン語、イタリア語、トルコ語を母語とする被験者と比較すると、日本語児は定型の物語を作り上げる能力(物語構成能力)に著しい早期発達を示す傾向のある子どもが多数認められた。これらの子どもは、保護者が読みきかせを早期から実施している家庭であることが多く、家庭教育が物語産出能力の早期発達に影響を与えていることが強く示唆された。また、助詞ハと助詞ガの使い分けにおいて、3歳児は助詞ハはほとんど用いず、眼前描写の助詞ガが用いられることがほとんどであった。その後、助詞ハの使用が年齢の増加と共に増大したが、使い分けにおいては従来指摘されていた新旧情報による使い分けではなく、情報の展開性による影響(枠(Frame))が大きいことが強く示唆された。
