项目摘要

祭りにおける旅所の問題は、神社の出目と地域の成り立ちに重要な関係を有するにもかかわらず、従来充分な研究蓄積がなかった。そこで、鹿児島県新田神社などの神幸祭の調査を実施し、旅所における儀礼と芸能、神の鎮座伝承の聞書き調査及び文献調査を行った。加えて、九州・中国地方に顕著である八幡宮放生会における旅所である浮殿・浜殿などと称される海辺・浜辺の旅所を調査した。また、大分県大分市の、旧豊後国一宮である賀来神社における祭礼や、旅所周辺に立つ祭礼市の調査を実施した。加えて、京都周辺の大社の神幸祭の調査も実施した。以上の調査により、頭屋ないしは頓宮・宿院などとも称される仮設施設である旅所は、神の巡遊・巡幸観念を基盤としていることが明白となった。旅所こそ、常設神社成立後の神の常在所以前の神顕現の本所であった。従って、旅所への神幸よりも、旅所から本社への還幸こそ、神祭の本義であるといわなければならない。神輿の渡御、山鉾の巡幸、神木、神主の行列も、還幸にこそ、本来の意味を有したものであることがわかった。旅所儀礼自体は、京都賀茂神社のように、秘儀となっているところもあり、加えて変貌が著しいが、毎年の神の再生がそのメーンであり、その祭、神顕現を寿ぐ芸能が奉納されるのである。今後の課題として、旅所の立地条件を分類し、旅所にまつわる神の鎮座伝承(神話)を類型化することによって、神幸祭と旅所を総合的に理解してゆきたい。
