ブレイクの「時間」は、永遠相(時に、円、球、太陽等で表わされる)から現象相(時に方形、方体、絵の枠自体等で表わされる)への展開の一様相であるとみることができるが、その抽象イメージが、三角形の二辺に、また、その具象イメージが、コンパス、火箸、ハンマー、絡み合う二本の木、蛇、屋根の稜線)などに託されている。現象相(時間相)は、また、永遠相を起源に持ち、不完全ながら、その諸特性を投影したものであることから、永遠相に因んで、円、球、太陽等で表わされることがある。それらの様々な動き、即ち、回転、振幅、螺旋、及び方位を指標とする動き等が、「時間」の「拍動(パルス)」を構成し、永遠相、時間相双方の象徴となりうる太陽(心臓)の拍動と捉えられている。尚、以上の解明により、ブレイクにおけるコンパスが単に誤れる理性を象徴するという、従来の一面的な解釈では、説明に無理があり、謎とされてきた、「十字架上に眠るキリスト」「大工の家の少年キリスト」「ヤコブの夢」等におけるコンパスの意味が明らかになった。特に方位について、現象相では、東→南→北→西、或いはその逆方向の8の字ベクトルが見られ、また、永遠相及び擬永遠相では、北→南→西→東、或いはその逆の8の字ベクトルが見られる。西方位は、特別に、永遠相への通路、転換点であるという特質を持つ事から、独自に、東→南→西→北(或いはその逆)のベクトルを持っている。これらのひと巡りとしてのパルスが、“divide & unite at will",“folding & unfolding",“according to their will"等の反復的動きを暗示する詩句に、多彩に言語化されている。この方位と時間との関わりは、奇しくも中国の易経と相通ずる。又、南北の軸は「構成」、東西の軸は「通路」を象徴する事も判明した。
