本研究は、慶長・元和・寛永期における料紙装飾のあり方、書流と料紙装飾技法の関連を現存作品の整理、分析を通じて把握し、光悦及びその周辺と宗達との関わり方を含めた、宗達の初期作品における新様式の成立を解明する一助とすることを目的に、計画された。本年度における調査、分析より、少なくとも一つの傾向として、以下の2点を指摘しうることが判明した。1.鎌倉時代以来途絶えていた書の料紙技法の内、同期に雲母刷(唐紙)技法が復興されたことが注目されてきたが、他にも同期に復興された技法がある。例えば、型紙を用いて糊を置き、金銀の砂子を撒く、いわゆる箔絵と呼ばれる技法を用いた料紙がこの時期に多く見られるようになる。型紙と染料を用いた、部分染めとでも呼ぶべき技法も同様である。桃山時代に入って以降、古筆断簡を集めた手鑑を制作、鑑賞することや、小倉色紙をはじめとする古筆を茶の掛物として用いることが流行していたことが以上の背景になっていたと考えられる。2.上記のように復興された各種技法を用いた装飾料紙と、書流、あるいは書家との間には、排他的ではないが、一定の関連が認められる。即ち、雲母刷及びそれと関連の深い金銀泥刷料紙は、やはり、光悦とその周辺に集中的に見られる。一方、近衛信尹やその周辺では、小倉色紙(有明の)などに類例が見られる。大振りな山並みや斜線を表した箔絵を施したものがかなり認められる。また、松花堂昭乗の色紙には、小倉色紙(こひすてふ)や色替の巻子本を切った古筆断簡に類似する、色替料紙がかなり見られる。つまり、どのような料紙を選択するのかを、書家が決定することか多かったと考えられるのである。今後も調査を続け、以上の成果をより確実なものとすると共に、光悦と宗達の関係へ考察を進める計画である。
