本研究は、Chomsky(1992)によって提唱されたMinimalist Programと呼ばれる普遍言語理論の枠組みのもとで、日本語のSuru-supportと英語のDo-supportに関する現象を比較対照研究することを目的とした。従来、日本語と英語は主要部パラメータ(Head Parameter)の値が異なっており、日本語ではHead Final、英語ではHead Initialになっているとの定説が確立していた。しかし、Kayne(1994)で提唱されたLinear Correspondence Axiom(LCA)から導き出される結論「あらゆる言語がSpec-Head-Complementの基本語順をもつ」という極めて制限の厳しい普遍的な結論、すなわちより説明力のある結論を支持する分析を日本語に関しても行う可能性が本研究で明らかになった。句構造の理論はKayne(1994)が発表されて以来、現在大幅な理論的変革が行われており、従来仮定されていたX-bar SchemaはKayne(1994)のLCAから導き出されることになった。またChomsky(1994)においてもX-bar Theoryは排除され、それに代わるBare Theoryと呼ばれる新しい句構造の理論が提案された。本研究における研究業績論文"Head parameter and Scrambling in Japanese"では、Kayne(1994)やChomsky(1994)の上述の基本路線に従い、日本語の基本語順SOVとかき混ぜ規則(Scrambling)が適用されたOSVの語順は共に普遍語順SVOから導き出されることが明らかにされた。さらに機能範疇AGRs,AGRoのパラメータの値、具体的にはChomsky(1992)で提案されたStrong,Weakの値の違いによって日本語と英語の基本語順の違いが説明できることも明らかになった。その説明において動詞句内主語仮説(VP-internal Subject Hypothesis)を仮定しており、その仮説の妥当性が間接的に証明することができた。しかし、Minimalist Programの基本的概念"Economy"がどのように言語理論の中で定式化されるかは諸説紛々としており、Economy of Derivation,Economy of Representationの原則に関する研究を発展させることが急務であり、本研究がその出発点にすぎないことは否めない。さらにScramblingという現象は、Economyの観点からして特殊な性質を持っており更なる研究が望まれる。
