長距離A移動における日本語と英語との相違は両言語におけるスクランブリング操作の有無から導き出されるという見通しで研究を行い、ミニマリスト・プログラムにおける(i)移動の局所性と(ii)Greedの原理との関わりに関して以下の結論を得た。まず、移動の局所性と長距離A移動の関わりについて。この2つの概念は一見矛盾するように見えるが、以下の仮説によりこの矛盾を解消することができることを示した。1.スクランブリング操作の有無は、顕在的なV上昇(V-raising)の有無による。2.顕在的V上昇の有無は、両言語における機能範疇が持つ素性の強弱を反映したもの。この2点から、日本語における長距離A移動が最小領域内での連続循環的移動により生成でき、一方、英語ではそのような移動ができないことが予測できる。この主張は、日本英語学会第12回全国大会シンポジウム(1994年11月13日)で発表すると共に未発表論文(Remarks on long-distance A-movement in Japanese and Minimality)にまとめた。次に、Greedの原理と連続循環的A移動の関わりについて。日本語で長距離受動態(superpassive)が可能であることは、表面上、単一の連鎖に2つの格が割り当てられるという従来の枠組みでは認められ得ない状況を生み出す。この状況は日本語に格助詞が存在することの反映であることを示した。3.格助詞は、それ自身最大投射を持ち、また、格を付与されうる。この仮説から、一見単一の連鎖に2つの格が付与されている様に見える現象は、実は、DPとKP(=格助詞の最大投射)の各々が単一の格を持つことの反映であり,その結果、日本語の長距離A移動はGreedの原理を満たせるが、英語の場合には、格助詞がないため、Greedの原理も満たせないことが捉えられる。この主張は裏面記載の論文にまとめた。なお、当初の研究計画における、韓国語やドイツ語の詳細な研究は完了していない。
