次の三つの観点から研究を行った。(1)19世紀における小説と絵画の関わりについての一般的傾向小説が文学形式の中心となり、伝統的には叙事詩、歴史、神話と結びつけられてきた絵画に大きな影響を与え、narrative paintingの発達を促した。また、1848年に若い画家たちによって始められたラフェエロ前派運動は、初期のロマン主義的な衝動が、より写実的な方法論、および同時代の社会問題の検討へと変化するという経過をたどるが、これは小説にも見られる変化である。激動する社会のなかで、小説と絵画は相互影響のもとに新しい芸術様式を模索していたのである。(2)エリオットの同時代の画家、特にラファエロ前派と女流画家に対する反応エリオットはラファエロ前派のメンバーたちと実際に交流があり、彼女の小説における詳細な写実的描写には彼らの手法との共通点がある。だが、同時に彼女は絵画的描写が生み出す「感傷的虚偽(pathetic fallacy)」には嫌悪を感じていたので、彼女のラファエロ前派に対する評価は複雑なものとなっている。そして、彼女のいくつかの作品には感傷的虚偽を感じさせるものがあり、理論と実践のギャップと彼女の作家としての苦悩を見いだすことができる。彼女の‘the picturesque'についての考えをさらに検討する必要がある。彼女の同時代の女流画家への共感は日記や手紙から知ることができるが、作品にはあまり直接的には表れていない。(3)芸術的資質をもつ登場人物の創造におけるエリオットとシャーロット・ブロンテの比較それぞれ全知の語り手と一人称語り手による作品形式にふさわしい技法を発展させており、テーマについては、ブロンテが提示したものをエリオットが発展させている。
