项目摘要

平成9年度発足をめざす重点領域研究計画の申請書作成準備のために、7月(名古屋大学)と11月(東京国立博物館)に研究会を開催した。さらに、12月下旬と2月上旬に小規模な研究打ち合わせの会を名古屋大学で開いた。2度の研究会において、研究班メンバーはアイヌ文化を中核とする北方諸文化研究の研究課題について、それぞれの立場から報告し、研究の現状の把握と当面の課題について議論した。それにもとづき、7研究項目(9計画研究)と総括班からなる研究計画をまとめた。アイヌ文化は北太平洋地域の北方諸文化のうちでは最南端に位置し、日本列島内の諸文化では最北端に位置するという文化地理的環境を有する。この特徴を考慮して、設置申請をする重点領域名は「北方文化と日本列島」とした。アイヌ文化に対する研究の集成と未刊行研究資料の整理を当面の研究課題の中核にすえ、それにもとづいて近い将来、シベリアやアラスカにおける極北・亜極北文化の研究を発展させたいという意図をあらわしたものである。9計画研究の名称は、北方諸民族の自然人類学的研究、アイヌ文化の形成過程、アイヌ文化の変容、北方民族に関する近世文書の集成、文献資料にもとづく北方交易研究、北方文化にかかわる交易品の理化学的分析研究、文法史を中心としたアイヌ語研究史、環極北圏諸文化の比較研究、アイヌ物質文化資料の集成と比較研究、である。これらの計画研究には、約85名の研究者が参画の意志表示をしている。この重点領域研究の実施により、研究の現状を集成するとともに、北方文化研究の体制が整い、近い将来の研究の飛躍が期待できると考えている。なお、これらの研究活動、研究発表、重点領域研究への申請の概要は、添付する成果報告書に詳しく記した。
