コムギとその近縁5属の採集系統や実験系統、及び遺伝子・DNAクローンを組織的かつ恒久的に保存し、有効に活用するためのネットワークを構築するため、班会議(2回)で全体的問題を検討するとともに、班員を「系統保存システム」、「DNAレポジトリ-」、「情報ネットワーク」の3班に分け、これら問題を個別に検討した。(1)系統保存システム:コムギ類系統保存の現体制は、人員・経費の両面において今尚甚だ不十分であるので、その整備・充実を関係当局に強く働きかける。同時に、研究者の力を組織化するため、短期間対応としては研究者が自発的にコムギ類系統保存センターの機能を分担する(19研究室より役割分担の申し出あり)。長期的対策としては、大学において、研究者としても優れ、かつ系統保存に情熱をもつ後継者を意図的に養成する。(2)DNAレポジトリ-:核については、核遺伝子のcDNAとゲノミックDNAのクローン、及び非遺伝子領域の特殊配列のクローンを、オルガネラについては、葉緑体、ミトコンドリア両ゲノムの全体をカバーする整列クローンと、遺伝子のクローンを収集・配布する必要がある。これには、2研究部門程度の組織の新設が必要である。(3)情報ネットワーク:当初、ストックリストの編集・刊行を予定した。しかし、データベースを構築して随時情報を更新できるようにし、併せて、インターネットを利用し瞬時に情報を提供できるようにすべしとの結論に達した。そこで、予定した印刷費をデータベース構築用のソフトの購入に当てた。これを用い、19ステーションよりなるデータベースを構築した(協力者、山崎と西川の努力を負う)。これに18,000系統の情報を収めた。このデータベースは遺伝研をホストとするインターネットに「KOMUGI-Wheat Network in Japan」として開局され、世界に向けて公開される体制を整えた。また、フロッピ-の形でも情報を提供できにようにした。
