Sialon ceramics can be applied gradually to refractory parts such as break rings of horizontal continuous casts from a blast furnace because of their favorable corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance. In the present study, various mechanical and thermal properties of beta'-Sialon ceramics, Si_<6-z> Al_z O_z N_<8-Z>, prepared from aqueous slurries by a slip casting method were investigated as a function of z values from 0 to 4 and the results were obtained as follows : (1) The strength reached a maximum of 660 Mpa (average 600 Mpa) at z=0.5. (2) Fracture toughness (K_<1c>) exhibited a maximum, 5.7 MPam^<1/2> (average 4.3 MPam^<1/2>), atz=0.5. (3) The thermal expansion coefficient had the lowest value, 3.4x10 ^6T^1, at z=0.5. (4) Sintered beta'-Sialon were densified in the range of z=0.5-1. These results indicate that beta'-Sialon exhibits the most suitable properties in the range of smaller z values rather than at z=1, and that each value is comparable with the published values for reaction-sintered beta'-Sialon. In view of the present results, beta'-Sialon ceramics, Si_<6-z> Al_z O_z N_<8-z>, (z=0.5-1), prepared by a slip casting method using aqueous slurries could be adopted, with no problem, for refractory parts.
