This research was designed to establish a tentative medical guideline for aged people with chronic diseases to enjoy stay or trek at high altitude. Four approaches were taken. 1.Physiological simulated study in an artificial meteorological chamber. Importance of diffusion during exercise at hypobaric condition were reported at Japanese Journal of Thoracic Disease (1996,1997 Masuyama). American Thoracic Society (1996, Mizoo), World Congress on Mountain Medicine and Physiology (1996, Masuyama). 2.Field physiological study on aged trekking group at the foot of Mt.Everest was reported at Japanese Journal of Hygiene and Japanese Journal of Mountain Medicine (1996, Kobayashi). 3.A questionnaire study to altitude travel/trekking companies in Japan on the provision or antidote of health troubles or accidents during their organized journey or trekking at altitude was done and reported at Japanese Journal of Mountain Medicine (1996, Ogihawa). 4.A round meeting on safe journey and trek at altitude was organized at the 16th Japanese Symposium on Mountain Medicine by organizations/societies relevant to altitude journey and trek such as Japanese Society of Mountain Medicine, Japanese Mountaineering Association, Japanese Mountaineering Guide Association. Two books for enlightenment, "The Mountaineeringology for aged trekker" (1995) and "The Mountaineeringology for aged trekker : Q & A" (1996), were published. These studies are considered to contribute practically and clinically on public welfare and health of aged people with chronic diseases.
