我が国においては人口の高齢化が急速に進んでおり、高齢者が物質面のみならず精神面においても充実した生活を送ることは重要な問題である。本研究の目的は、高齢者に対する情動の活性化に対して、衣服や化粧を手段とするおしゃれ意識やその行動がどのように寄与できるかについての基礎的資料を得るために、高齢者の衣服や化粧に対する意識や実態について考察することである。この研究を進めるにあたり、まず高齢者女性190名(平均年齢74.1歳)を対象として、1995年11月に質問紙個人面接法によりアンケート調査を実施した。調査内容は化粧に対する意識や実態、衣服の着装行動に対する意識や実態などである。その結果、化粧をすることに対して約8割が「気持ちが若返る」と回答し、また、約7割が「高齢者が化粧をすることについてまわりの反応は冷たい」とは思わず、約9割が「高齢者になっても化粧は必要だ」と考えており、化粧に対する意識は肯定的意見が過半数を占めたが、加齢による化粧行動の実態は、約4割が「簡素化した」と回答しており、化粧に対する意識と実態の間には違いが認められた。次に、化粧を通して情動を活性化させる効果が報告されている鳴門山上病院を視察し、化粧行動の実態と効果を把持するために実態調査を行った。鳴門山上病院では、化粧によって情動に刺激を与え、個人の社会性を回復させ、また化粧を本人がすることにより、機能の回復・維持・増進させる手段ととらえ実践している。その結果、容姿への関心の増加・日常動作の変化・オムツ外しの成功・情動の安定・痴呆症状の改善等の効果がみられた。本研究により衣服や化粧を手段としたおしゃれ意識やその行動は、情動の活性化や積極性の拡大等のプラス効果をもたらす生きがいの一要因になることが明らかとなった。
