本研究の目的は、1)大学生新入運動部員における普遍的ストレスを縦断的に検討し、2)誰からの、どの種のソーシャル・サポートが精神的安寧に貢献するのかを明らかにすることであった。5大学の新入部員220名(男子132名、女子1年88名)に対し、5月、6月、7月、9月、11月の5回にわたり、1)「運動部活動における適応感評定尺度(ASSAC)」短縮版、2)「対人用心理的距離地図(PDM)」、3)「環境移行事態にともなうストレス調査票」、4)「運動部員におけるソーシャル・サポート評定尺度」による質問紙調査を実施した。又、ASSAC短縮版において特徴的な変化を示した部員に対して、各時期におけるストレス内容、ソーシャル・サポートの影響、対人環境の認知変容を明らかにすることを目的とした面接調査を実施した。得られた資料における分析の結果および面接内容から以下のことが明らかになった。1)男子におけるストレスは入部当初、自己と部全体としての技術レヴェルの落差、部の指導・運営体制に対する予想や期待とのずれによるものが大きく、次第に部内における自己有能感がもてないことがストレスの原因となっている。女子は入部当初、男子と同様、自己と部全体としての技術レヴェルの落差がストレスとはなっているが、これと同等以上に上級生や同級生との人間関係がストレスの原因と挙げられ、調査時期の範囲ではこの種のストレスが持ち越されていた。又、指導者との人間関係が強いストレスの原因と挙げられるようになった。2)ソーシャル・サポートについては、男子では部員からの情緒的、技術的、道具的サポートが有効であり、女子では部員からの技術的サポート、指導者からの情緒的、技術的サポートが有効であることが示唆された。継時的変化は男女とも本研究の資料からは示されなかった。
