高齢者の社会的ネットワークの形成と維持において、電話やファクシミリなどのメディアの利用が持つ意義を明らかにするために、札幌市およびその近郊の高齢者を対象にしてアンケート調査を行った。調査した項目は(1)社会的ネットワークに関する項目と(2)メディア利用に関する項目である。(1)については、調査対象者の社会関係の種類別にその交際頻度と主観的な重要度を尋ねた。(2)については、電話とファクシミリを中心にパーソナルな通信メディアの認知度と所有および利用の状況を尋ねた。特に電話については、1週間にわたって発信および着信ごとの相手・時間・内容などの記録をつけてもらった。アンケート調査の単純集計からは、以下のようなことが明らかになった。多くの高齢者にとって、同居している家族以外の人々との関係では、「近所の友人」との関係が交際頻度が多く、主観的にも重要な関係として認知されており、それはいわゆる「近所づきあい」とは区別される関係のようである。「近所の友人」は電話の発信と着信の頻度も多かった。このことは、対面的コミュニケーションのネットワークと電話コミュニケーションのネットワークとが重なり合っていることを示している。通話の内容を見ると、訪問の約束や誘いのために電話を利用することが多く、対面的な関係を支え補完するものとして電話が利用されている。なお、文献研究を通じて電話コミュニケーションのもつ独特な性格について知見を得ていたが、高齢者はそうした性格についてはあまり意識していないようであった。
