本研究は古典派経済学の形成期にあった19世紀英国の世相が同時代の文学作品にどのような影響を与えたかを探ることを目的とし、そのために今回入手した資料をもとにして以下のような成果をあげた。【encircled1】産業革命期の工業都市形成にはエンクロージャーによる離農者の増加が主因とされているが、当時の穀物法に対するさまざまな不満もその原因となっていたこと。【encircled2】マンチェスターのように軽工業から重工業都市へと変貌した新興の工業都市では熟練労働者の不足から事故も多く、その一方で保険制度の未整備により労働者の不安、不満が募っていたこと。【encircled3】住宅、福祉、医療政策が都市の膨張に追いつかないことから生ずる危機感は労働者の団結を生んだばかりでなく、彼らの社会意識、権利意識を高め、ひいては情報を又聞きではなく自ら入手したいという欲望を抱かせるに至り、結果的に彼らの識字率の向上の契機となったこと。これらのことは文学史でも経済学史でも簡単に触れられていることであるが、その背景にまで立ち入った記述、特に当時の議会報告書を検討すると、「一般庶民」としてこれまで処理されてきたいわゆる「読者大衆」が決して没個性ではなく、むしろ彼らの切実な欲求から情報を求め、現実に対処しようとしている、意志を持った一集団としてその姿を明確に現してくる。彼らは自分たちを取り巻く複雑な社会状況を把握しようと、また、現状を打破、改善する方策を示唆するものを求めて、当時の(ジャーナリズムを含めた)文学に接近していく。そのために彼らが最初に手にしたのは絵入り新聞などの簡略化された情報であったが、やがて自らもその担い手である産業革命や資本主義を背景に成立しつつあった古典派経済学思想を含む論説や小説に引きつけられていった。以上の成果を踏まえて具体的な作品を取り上げてゆくことが次の段階であるが、端緒に着いたばかりとは言え、更にこの主題が深まる手ごたえを感じている。
