The porpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effectiveness of the Holmum-YAG laser application for TMJ arthroscope. The thermal and histopathological investigation were made experimentally using articular tissue of the rabbit joint.Intra-articular temperature examination :The arthroscopic and a dedital thermometer probe were inserted into the articurar cavity of rabbit knees. The tip of probe was placed within the visual field by the arthroscope. A laser carrying fiber was introduced through the working channel of the arthroscope into the articular cavity. The intra-articular increse in temperature by irradiation was recorded. There was almost no increase in temperature at 2.5J.Histopathological examination :The articular capsules of the rabbit knees were opend. The articular catilage of the femoral condyle and the meniscus were irradiated. After irradiation, the irradiated femoral condyle and meniscus were removed immudiately, staind with hematoxylin and eosin. The histpathological examination of irradiation sites was carried out by light mucroscope. The ablation crater in meniscus at 2.5J was 0.75mm in depth. The abration crater in the femoral condyle reached the subcartilaginous bone through articular cartilage of about 0.3mm thickness.
