Dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation emitted from a six-phase ac glow discharge in advanced six poles magnetic field which has a high radiation efficiency is investigated experimentally. Kanechlor KC-300 (equivalent to Aroclor 1242) is used as PCBs and an isopropyl alcohol having a function of a hydrogen donor is adopted as a solvent. It is shown that dechlorination reaction proceeds with time under the UV irradiation and almost of PCBs are converted into biphenyl.Sample solutions are contained in a quarts tube with a diameter of 5cm and a length of 50cm. The concentration ratio of PCB is set to be 100ppm whose value is nearly equal to that of the wasted insulation-oils repacked in containers of transformer which had been filled with PCB insulation-oil. The quartz tubes are inserted into a UV light source with a diameter of 10cm and a length of 50cm. The UV light is generated by a six-phase glow discharge at a pressure 0.1Torr of H2 gas. The ac electric power inputted into the region where samples are set about 10W.The dechlorination process is analyzed by means of gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Shimazu GC/MS-QP1100WA) with a column of CBP1-S25-050 (25m・0.33mm, 0.50mm film-thickness).The purpose of present study is to develop a high capacitive low-cost UV light source, which is applicable to detoxicate a large amount of toxic organic chlorine compounds such as PCBs and chlorofluorocarbons, by using the poly-phase ac glow discharge generated at the frequency of the commercial electric power system in an advanced multi-poles magnetic field. Since the discharge current can flow aontinuously without any breaking and plasma be well confined without end loss, the light is emitted continuously with small fluctuation and efficiently with strong intensity. Furthermore, we can irradiate samples almost uniformly from surroundings by arranging geometrical shapes and positions of multiple electrodes.
