本研究は以下の目的のもとに行なわれた。(1)既に公開されている統計データ(学校保健統計調査)を用いて、身体成熟の前傾現象および発達加速現象を昭和30年代から平成4年度に至るまでの身体的な変化の分析を通してその推移を明らかにすること、(2)そしてその分析にいくつかの縦断的方法と横断的方法を重ね合わせてそれぞれの短所を補い、長所を最大限に利用するためのデータ収集のストラテジーであるシーケンス(系列)方略を適用して年代(世代差)の明確な姿を浮き彫りにすること、(3)また、従来から身体的な成長は年代的な変遷を示しているという研究結果が示されているが、果たしてそれはここ数十年の間に生じているのか、また生じているとすればどの程度のものであるのか、新しいデータ収集のモデルにしたがってパラメトリックに分析をすること。身長・体重・胸囲・座高の4つについてそれぞれ男女ごとに分け、それを年齢差と年代差の観点から分散分析した。全体的な傾向として、従来言われているようなこの年齢での男女差がより詳しく認められたこと、いくつかの例外はあるが年代を追ってどの数値も増加していること、などが明確になった。また、身長や座高はそれほど大きな違いは年代ごとには見られていない。しかし、特に男子の体重や胸囲については、年代が上になるにしたがって値が大きくなっており、身体成熟の前傾現象あるいは発達加速現象というよりも体格は大柄になりつつあるようである。また、女子は男子に比べて標準偏差の違いは小さく、体格の違いが明確になっている。分析したデータは、最近の10年間の分であったが、その傾向はかなり明確になった。加えて、これらのデータともう少し以前のものとの比較が可能であるならば、時代差はより明確になったのではなかろうかと思われる。
