本研究の目的は、幼児の愛他心の発達におよぼす遊びと文化の影響を明らかにすることである。本目的を達成するために以下の2つの調査を行った。調査1「幼児の愛他心の発達におよぼすごっこ遊びの効果について」:愛知県H保育園4歳児20名を対象に、日常の保育場面での遊び形態による群分けを行った後、愛他性テスト(プリテスト)→ごっこ遊び→愛他性テスト(ポストテスト)を行った。愛他性テストでは、援助可能場面と分与可能場面における判断とその動機をたずねた。プリテストの結果、日常集団度の高いごっこ遊びを経験している幼児に「援助する」と答える者が多く、シールの平均分与数も多かった。またその動機も「共感的志向」に基づくものが多かった。しかし、全員参加のごっこ遊びを経験した後のポストテストでは、群間の差異が縮小する傾向がみられ、愛他心を育てる場としてのごっこ遊びの有効性が示唆された。調査2「幼児の愛他心と遊びにおける対人関係並びに文化とのかかわりについて」:愛知県T保育園4歳児20名(ペル-国籍児1名を含む)とカルフォルニア州C小学校キンダークラス21名を対象に、調査1と同様の愛他性テスト、遊び場面における対人関係の特徴と好きな遊びの観察、親や保育者の子育て観等についてのインタビュー調査を行った。その結果、遊び集団における円満な対人関係の構築が、愛他心の発達に影響をおよぼすことが示唆された。また、援助判断において日米間に差がみられ、米国の幼児は全員「援助する」と答えるとともに、援助方法が具体的であった。これは、日頃から他者を援助することや自分自身を守ることを積極的に学習していることのあらわれであり、責任感のある子どもを第一に望む親や保育者の子育て観の反映と考えられる。
