この研究は、青年文化における祝祭空間を取り上げて、若者たちのアイデンティティ維持(=存在証明)のプロセスを実証的に明らかにすることを目指して企画された。そこで得られた主な知見は、以下の通りである。1.消費文化における祝祭空間について、様々な情報資料を収集・分析し、伝統的な祝祭空間と比較した結果、日本社会のコミュニケーション空間の構造に現在大きな変動が生じているのではないかとの知見を得るに至った。従来、1次関係(家族・友人に代表される全人格的関わり)と2次関係(官僚制に代表される役割的関わり)の二つから成っていたコミュニケーション空間の構造が急速に崩壊するのに合わせて、1.5次関係と表現される新たなコミュニケーション空間が形成されつつあるのだ。具体的に言えば、若者たちの友人関係(家族関係)は急速に希薄化(役割的関わりに変化)しており、それにつれて、彼らの存在証明の場は消費的な祝祭空間の中に移動している。この新たな空間は、高い匿名性と情緒的な関わりが同居する場であり、かつ、この特徴は彼らの自我の構造と高い親和性を持っている。2.上にあげた包括的な分析と並行して、今年度は、真如苑青年部弁論大会をフィールドとする事例研究にも精力的に携わった。今回事例とした活動は、同青年部の夏の一大行事であり、参加者は、仲間との相互作用の中で、自分の人生を振り返り再構成する営みを3ケ月にわたり繰り返す。集会への参与観察、文献資料の収集、関連者へのインタビューなどを積み重ねることで、この活動の実態にかなりアプローチすることが可能となった。相互作用と存在証明とのミクロでダイナミックなプロセス分析は、まさに新しい領域であり、今後分析の精度を更に上げて、来年度の日本社会学会大会で発表する予定である。
