本年度は、当初計画通り、関東・東北地方を中心とした古墳時代前期の前方後円墳の測量図を集成し、イメージスキャナより測量図を画像データとして取り込み、パーソナルコンピュータを用いてデータベースの作成を中心に課題に取り組んだ。その際、併せて類型化の作業も行ったが、関東・東北地方においても畿内大形前方後円墳と同企画墳(類型墳)が畿つか存在することを確認し、同時に多様な企画を持つ前方後円墳(非類型墳)も再確認した。ただし、集成した資料の質(古墳の依存度、調査の有無、測量図の精度)は必ずしも均一ものではなく、従来よりモデルとして想定していた、限られた空間における継続的な類型墳の展開とそれに伴う非類型墳の存在は千葉県木更津市周辺でその見通しを認めたに留まった。このような資料的制約によって妨げられている実態把握の実状を回避し、また木更津市域で認めた現象を他地域にて比較検討するために岡山県美作盆地周辺(津山市、落合町、勝央町)に所在する前方後円(方)墳の踏査を実施し、墳丘形態・規模はもとより分布や古墳そのものの依存度などを調査した。この踏査から新たに美作地域の地形的環境や前方後円(方)墳の分布状況から集団毎の政治的領域の認識が広大な関東平野などに比べ容易であることや情報の伝達のルートを限定的に理解し得るなど、当初想定したモデルを追証していくために適していると判断し得た。本地域は古墳の依存度が良好なものの未調査のものが多く、自ら測量調査などを実施し資料を蓄積する必要があるなど解決すべき課題が残されているが、本課題への取り組みを通じ、美作地域に研究の重点を移し小地域を徹底的に同一基準での調査を実施し仮説検証に臨んでゆくなど、新たな課題を加えることができた。
