本研究では、コンピュータにおける検索機能及びデータベース化機能を用いて、『オックスフォード英語辞典第2版(CD-ROM版)』に収集されている英語の動詞由来派生名詞例に関して網羅的なデータ分析を行い、そのデータ結果を語形成理論の重要な問題のひとつである「形態的生産性(Morphological Productivity)」を決定する条件に関して検討・議論した。Baayen(1992、1993、1994)などが提唱する形態的生産性に関する接近法(Hapax-based Approach)を『オックスフォード英語辞典第2版』に収録されている英語例において照合し、その統計処理おける信頼性を検証した。その結果、Baayenのデータ結果と本研究で得られたデータ結果は一致することが判明し、形態的生産性を測定する方法論としてBaayenの接近法が妥当であるという結論に達した。さらに、この方法論が正しいならば、形態的生産性は新語が出現する頻度と関連をもつこととなり、語形成における頻度に関わる意味論的要因及び認知的要因が文法体系の中に組み込まれる必要性が指摘される。また、『オックスフォード英語辞典第2版』の特徴である通事的英語例の豊富さにも焦点を当て、形態的生産性を通事的側面から分析した点においても、本研究の結果は特徴づけられる。

This study discusses the conditions for determining the use of search function and Morphological function in English dictionary, second edition (CD-ROM edition), and the important problem of morphological productivity in English verb derivation. Baayen(1992, 1993, 1994) describes the Hapax-based Approach to the productiveness of a given form in the English Dictionary, 2nd Edition. The results of this study are consistent with those of Baayen's approach to determine the productivity of morphology. In addition, the methodology of this topic is correct, the productive nature of the form, the frequency of occurrence of new words, the relevance of new words, the frequency of language formation, the essential causes of meaning theory and the essential causes of cognition, and the necessity of organization in the grammatical system. The characteristics of the English dictionary, 2nd edition, focus, morphological productivity, analysis of the bottom of the English dictionary, and the results of this study are characterized by the following.
