多変量正規母集団において共分散行列が一様共分散構造をもつときの平均ベクトルの統計的推測を行った。具体的には、信頼係数と領域の大きさを与えたときの平均の信頼領域の構成について研究した。共分散行列の構造はわかっているが、そのパラメータが未知である場合、あらかじめ標本数を決定することはできないことがわかっている。そこで二段階法による信頼領域の構成を提案し、構造を仮定しない場合との標本数の比較を理論的な面と数値的な面をうまく組み合わせることによって行った。その結果、信頼領域の大きさを0に近づける意味での漸近有効性は同じであるが、大きさを一定に固定したときには構造を仮定したときの方が少ない標本数で同じ推測が可能であることが示された。また、提案した二段階法を実際のデータ解析に適用できるようにするために必要とされる確率分布を導くことを試みた。しかし、正確に導くことは困難であったため、漸近展開による分布の近似を与えた。また、純粋な逐次統計解析についても結果を与えた。以上の結果を得たことにより、今後の研究課題に考えている一様共分散構造をもつ成長曲線モデルの統計解析への二段階法の適用の可能性が大きくなったといえる。また、最近、一様共分散構造をもつ場合の二標本問題が議論されはじめている。一変量母集団の二標本問題における二段階法の改良について現在共同研究中であるから、これらの研究成果をうまく結合させることによって、多変量母集団の二標本問題へと拡張できる可能性もでてきた。
