项目摘要

本年度の作業は、ひきつづきマイクロフィルム史料の解析と整理を進めることであった。これらの作業に際しては、文書館のレファレンス・アーキヴィストと面談の上、史料の背景や収録、目録化などの過程をリサ-チし、参考にした。また、そのなかで新たに米国議会図書館の稀少史料も収集した。研究内容の「黒人文化」と「人種意識」についての資料の整理と並んで、今年度は「人種」に関する近年の理論状況を整理検討し、『多文化主義のアメリカ』(東京大学出版会)に発表した。これは、文化と人種についての議論の前提を確保しておくという位置づけのもとにおこなった研究で、現代の人種理論の最前線を把握するうえで今後の研究にとって不可欠のものとなるものである。近年、「人種」を回避する議論が目立つなか、「人種」を論じる(あるいは論じない)ことの方法と意味についても、アメリカ史研究会例会(2000年1月29目)でその成果の一部を報告をした。また「人種意識」に関する研究については、「意識」を実証的に解明するという方法上の難しさを再認識し、民俗(folklore)についての分野について早急に人類学の方法を検討すると同時に、この方面の史料を検索収集することにした。この点については、黒人たちが自己をどのように認識したかを解明するさい、黒人に対する白人の認識がどのように黒人に投影されるか(再帰性reflexivity)を考察しておく必要がある。このような考えから、白人のもつ人種観についても民俗的なアプローチで検討する必要があることに行き着いた。この課題については、まだ十分な先行研究がないので、方法論と史料面を含めて本格的な研究にむけた準備を進めておきたい。
