Die Meteor Reisen M49/2 und M49/3 sollen in zwei Abschnitten zur Vorbereitung einer Bohrexpedition des Ocean Drilling Programms beitragen. Auf Grundlage des Bohrvorschlages von Wefer et al. 'Brazil-Falkland (Malvinas) Confluence: Paleoceanography of a Mixing Region' sollen ausgewählte Gebiete am südamerikanischen Kontinentalrand von Argentinien, Uruguay und Brasilien mit hochauflösender Seismik vermessen und geologisch beprobt werden. Diese Daten dienen zur Auswahl geeigneter Bohrlokationen, um die neogene Paläozeanographie des Gebietes zu untersuchen.
