今回の研究では、日本の政治環境における政治的なメッセージにおいて、シンボルやメタファーがどのように使われているか、具体的には政治家が自分の話の中で特定の言葉や名前、文章をどう使っているかを明らかにし、分析することが目的であった。そして政治家がこれらのシンボルやメタファーを用いるのは、その受け手に対してどのような感情や行動を引き起こそうとしてのことなのか、文化や状況と政治家の言葉遣いとの関係はどのようなものかなどについても調べることも目的の一つであった。具体的には、日本国内で発された政治的なメッセージの中で、どのような言葉がシンボル、メタファーとして用いられたのか、またその具体的な内容や形式について各首相の所信表明演説や国会議員の後援会における演説などからそれらを拾い出し、さらに政治家やマスメディアがどのようなレトリックや言葉遣いで『現実』を構築していくのかも探ろうとした。材料としたのは日刊紙の政治記事、及び申請者自身が国会議員や公職者、新聞記者などに対して行ったインタビューなどである。ただ、コミュニケーションの中には既知のこととして言語化されない部分も少なくないので、政治言語におけるそれらの表面化しない部分も無視せずに、それらの重要性にも留意した。以上の分析から、日本の政治家が大衆の心理や行動に与えうる刺激におけるメッセージの可能性について考察した。また、これについては既存の欧米での研究を参考にしながら日本と欧米との類似点や相違点を明らかにしようともしている。そのために、現在はこの分野における欧米の研究者と協力して、今回の研究結果をもとに共同著作の準備を進めている。
